Spectra Logic: Our Review...
We were extremely pleased to have the folks from Spectra Logic at our event at the Tower Of London last year, they made a really good case on the future of archive storage and introduced their new S3 compatible Object Storage Gateway – Black Pearl.
We’ve been very quick to take up on the movement to more application accessible object storage, which deliver many benefits over traditional SAN storage when it comes to data in the higher tiers such as archive and legacy. A new addition to the Spectra Logic family is the disk based Arctic Blue solution, for those that need higher access rates than a tape backed system, but we think the ultimate solution will be a ‘triple play’ of Black Pearl as the S3 gateway, data then sent in parallel to both disk based Arctic Blue and one of Spectras formidable LTO tape library solutions.
In addition to constantly churning out innovative products such as Black Pearl and Arctic Blue, we find Spectra's support incredibly good. Proactive support cases are raised if a problem is detected when devices ‘phone home’. The really refreshing part and why Spectra is held in such a high esteem by many of our customers, is their ‘Assisted Self Maintenance’ packages, essentially spare parts which are shipped to the customer, which they can replace themselves – without the need to involve an onsite engineer. If you are the particularly paranoid type and do not want anonymous on site engineers messing with your backup tapes, we think Spectra's ASM is a huge selling point.
